- Abstract
This article presents information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this case, the CDC looks into cases of antimicrobial resistant streptococcus pneumoniae in the state of Massachusetts during 2001-2006. The S. pneumoniae is a leading cause of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), meningitis, otitis and sinusitis. Introduction of a heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in 2000 resulted in a decline of the disease but since then other serotypes, not covered by the vaccine, have been increasingly seen. A study of cases in Massachusetts showed that the overall rate of IPD remained stable during the time period but that cases of IPD caused by types not covered by the vaccine is of concern.
