Free trade does not foster peace.

- Abstract
There is a widespread belief among modern social scientists, such as economists, political scientists, and philosophers - especially those of a classical liberal or libertarian bent - that free trade fosters peace. Multilateral trade and especially intra-company trade are mostly overlooked (see e.g. Johnson, [18]; Coyne, [7]; McDonald, [23]; Gelpi & Grieco, [11]; Barbieri, [2]; Sobek, [34], pp. 107-27; Macmillan, [20]; Owen, [27]; Mansfield & Snyder, [22]; Doyle, [9]). Smith never argued that trade is able to overcome the fundamental traits of human nature, or for that matter other causes of war, such as religion or geopolitics. Actually, free trade could just as likely be a cause of war: "the jealousy of trade" (Hume, [16]) also leads to international conflict.
