- Abstract
Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), also known as Rosai-Dorfman disease, is characterized by a complex inflammatory process of unknown origin that most of the times affect lymph nodes; however, sometimes it has extranodal involvement, including the central nervous system. We report a 56-year old woman with episodes of mild headache episodes accompanied by dizziness 3 weeks prior to her admission. The physical and neurological examination was unremarkable. A magnetic resonance scan showed a lesion suggestive of meningioma. A frontotemporal craniotomy with intraoperative biopsy was performed which revealed in a differed diagnosis a small and round cell tumor probably lymphoma or inflammatory pseudotumor. The lesion was totally excised, and the postoperative period had no complications. The definitive diagnosis of the biopsy was Rosai-Dorfman disease of the dura and the temporal muscle, confirmed by inmunohistochemestry with S-100 proteín reaction. The aim of this report is to present an unusual feature of extranodal Rosai-Dorfman disease: isolated involvement of the central nervous system, and the temporal muscle.
