- Title
Non-invasive ventilation in patients with hematological malignancies: the saga continues, but where is the finale?
- Authors
Benoit, Dominique D.; Depuydt, Pieter O.
- Abstract
The author reflects on noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) treatment of acute respiratory failure (ARF) in patients with hematological illness. He says that two trials randomizing patients with diffuse pulmonary and hypoxemia infiltrates between supportive oxygen and NIV treatment have found reduced intubation rates and improved survival. Moreover, he discusses the study by V. Squadrone and colleagues, which used continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in treating hypoxemic ARF.
