- Abstract
The present work was designed to investigate the characteristic features of anatomical and histological development of the Metanephros of local domestic Iraqi sheep embryo, Awasi sheep (Ovis aris) in prenatal stages (first trimester of gestation). The study was carried out to determine the morphohistological development changes of Metanephros. The study was performed on female’s pregnant ewe (10 for prenatal study) where collected 10 sheep’s fetuses from slaughtered in the abattoirs of Baghdad, Najaf and Babylon provinces for prenatal study distributed into two stages: 40-45 gestational age and 50-55 gestational age (five fetuses for each age). The morphological study revealed at first trimester, the Metanephros situated at the pelvic cavity associated closely with mesonephros with small in size, immature and not yet at the nephron forming stage and continuous in growing, the Metanephros has taken on a more definite shape located among the sacral and sublumber region relatively where the right kidney was bean shaped and the left kidney appeared as slightly curved bean shape. The present study demonstrates that the sheep Metanephros at birth shows nephrons in all stages of development, those situated nearest to the medulla being the oldest and fully differentiated whilst those at the peripheral cortex are immature and in an early stage of development. Histologically, the present study demonstrates that the sheep Metanephros at birth shows nephrons in all stages of development, those situated nearest to the medulla being the oldest and fully differentiated whilst those at the peripheral cortex are immature. The developmental study at first trimester of gestation (40-45) and (50-55) days revealed that the metanephros covered by very delicate capsule with no visible demarcation line between cortex and medulla with prominent numerous mesenchymal cells and well development blood vessels and also there is no juxtaglomerular apparatus in renal corpuscle with large numbers of kidney tubules which appear not well development relatively.
