- Abstract
The present study aims to analyze how corporate governance contributes to performance improvement in a private hospital. As specific objectives, this research proposes to characterize the corporate governance process in the hospital, to identify the corporate governance strategies used, to overcome the barriers and difficulties encountered in the implementation process and to verify the contributions of corporate governance to hospital performance in the hospital context in the perception of managers. It is a unique case study through exploratory research of a qualitative nature. Data were collected through field visits and semi-structured interviews with professionals from a private hospital in São Paulo, and data analysis was performed through Bardin content analysis. The research provided an understanding of the dimensions of research on the implanted governance structure, implementation factors, and performance impacts. It was noted from the survey that the Board of Directors became the catalyst for all initiatives within the body of good governance practices, but the entire chain of managers was committed to providing faster decisions and by the right people. Few implementation barriers have been identified in the process and the mapped impacts on hospital performance are less tangible, addressing management aspects: clearer and faster decision making, better alignment of efforts across the organization, leadership development, creation of a culture of more effective accountability.
