- Abstract
The Hostage is a translation of one of the Yemeni novels which is entitled 'Ar-Rahina'. It has won the acceptance of its readers not only among Yemenis and Arabs but also the foreigners. This fame and acceptance is because of the simplicity and realism of the story. It portrays the pathetic and sorrowful situation of a society which the writer has lived in critical days. The realism in the story is reflective of the novelist's narrative ability. Simplicity of the novel's language reflects the simplicity of a Yemeni writer. In this novel, one can find the depth of his love for his country and its people. Dammaj (1934-2000) is a versatile Arab writer from Yemen. He is not only a powerful writer but a champion of the underdogs and oppressed. The novelist airs his concern for the betterment of the common people through his novel. The novel forms his mouthpiece for his ideals. The Hostage reflects the emotional conflicts and aspirations of the people tinged with occasional humour which make it quite engaging. May Jayyusi and Christopher Tingley have successfully translated The Hostage into English language. They have made a bridge between the two languages, Arabic and English to enable the English reader to grasp the literary and historical nuances the novel conveys. The novel also echoes the idyllic beauty of Yemen with its rich cultural heritage. It would be appropriate to use Thomas Hardy's phrase, 'The Wessex' for most of the Dammaj's use of the Yemeni landscape in the novel. The 'Wessex' is the most common place in Hardy's writings. (Hudson, 270) As well as 'The Countryside' in dammaj's. Thus, the paper throws lights on the Yemeni landscape reflected in one of the twentieth century masterpieces, The Hostage.
