- Authors
Ryan, Edward T.
- Abstract
The article discusses the 2010-11 cholera outbreak in Haiti from a global pandemic perspective. Other countries that experienced major cholera epidemics in the past 10 years are Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Sudan, South Africa, Malawi, Liberia and Vietnam. One of the factors that contributed to the longevity of the current pandemic is the microbiological feature of the El Tor biotype of Vibrio cholerae. It notes the continued evolution of the El Tor biotype during the pandemic. It points out the possible use of cholera vaccines in disease-endemic settings.
