- Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to examine the validity and reliability of a recently developed coping instrument, entitled the Approach to Coping in Sport Questionnaire (ACSQ; Kim, 1999), with respect to intercollegiate Korean athletes. The ACSQ measures athletes' reported cognitive, affective and behavioral coping efforts to counter psychological difficulties experienced during competitions. A Korean version of the ACSQ was administered to a sample of 273 Korean athletes. Exploratory factor analyses revealed a 30-item, six-dimension solution; Active Planning/Cognitive Restructuring, Emotional Calming, Seeking Social Support, Behavioral Risk, Turning to Religion, and Mental Withdrawal. The revised ACSQ-Korean was administered to a subsequent sample of 404 Korean college-level athletes to confirm its factorial structure. The results of a confirmatory factor analysis supported the hypothesized six-factor structure. Preliminary evidence regarding the construct validity of the instrument was also provided.
