Exploring Neglected Keyboard Compositions by Child Composers.

- Abstract
The phenomenon of children composing fluently is not a usual occurrence, due to the amount of training and skill one needs to acquire before tackling the process of composition. While children who compose are marveled for their ability, music written by children is a largely untouched and neglected body of repertoire. Due to the nature in how children learn, these compositions are almost completely ignored due to the view that children are inexperienced, and thus create compositions which are byproducts of obedience to musical instruction, and/or ersatz of prior compositions. However, musicologist and scholar Barry Cooper suggests there were some children who produced functioning musical compositions which show independent musical thought and personal musical inclinations in their compositions. Cooper argues that there are some compositions by children that already display characteristics associated with their mature compositional style and merit careful study. The objective of this paper is to show that it is possible for compositions by children to display much more musical thought than traditionally believed. The goal is to encourage more research to be done on music written by children and foster more exposure and performance of these little-known works. Selected keyboard compositions by L. V. Beethoven, F. Mendelssohn, A. Mathieu and E. Naoumoff will be analyzed in this paper.
