- Abstract
Objective: we aim to identify annual direct medical cost of type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment for outpatient visit in a teaching hospital. Methodology: The direct costs medical were determined by conducting a retrospective audit on 1077 patient medical records at Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Teaching Hospital in Kelantan. Results: average annual outpatient treatment cost was RM 1861.35 ($ 572.7) per patient with the minimum cost of RM 654 ($ 201.2) per patient to a maximum cost of RM5579.13 ($1716.7) per patient. Out of the total treatment cost, 55.3% was attributed by antidiabetic medication cost, 28.9 was cost of laboratory tests, 6.7% was cost of annual visit to clinic and 9.2 was cost of medical personnel. Conclusion: The study revealed the good control of blood glucose level may lead to decrease treatment cost on diabetes care.
