The article discusses the succession planning efforts of Jack Smith, owner and president of their family-owned business JD & Sons, manufactuer and distributor of wood products. It notes that his two sons aged 42 and 43 has refused to take over the 123-year old business following his retirement. It indicates the options of Smith for the company's future including the search for another general manager, the sale of the company and the possible closure through selling its assets.
