- Abstract
This article focuses on the effects of antiarrhythmic drugs on defibrillation threshold in patients with the implantable cardioverter defibrillator. The implantable cardioverter defibrillator is designed to prevent sudden cardiac death from ventricular tachyarrhythmias. In order to evaluate the long-term stability of internal defibrillation energy requirements, the defibrillation thresholds were determined in 20 patients using a patch-patch epicardial configuration at the time of implantation and at the time of pulse generator replacement. All defibrillation threshold measurements were performed using an external cardioverter defibrillator that delivers a truncated exponential shock waveform that is identical to the waveform of the automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator.
