- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the artistic work of the 20th-century American muralist Thomas Hart Benton and his controversial status due to the content and style of his paintings. Details are given highlighting several elements of Benton's work which led to popular criticism, particularly noting his ambiguous use of historical material to either celebrate or criticize regional culture in unconventional depiction. Benton's philosophy of engaging historical narrative in his public murals is also discussed.
