- Abstract
The article offers information on the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on the brains of criminals to determine their mental behaviors. It examines the case of psychopath Brian Dugan who was convicted for multiple murders following his heinous crimes committed from 1984-1986. It discusses the researches of University of New Mexico neuroscientist Kent Kiehl on the brain of Dugan through the fMRI as well as the efforts of University of Pennsylvania's Brain Behavior Center director Ruben Gur to determine the metabolic activity of the brain through the use of the positron emission tomography (PET). Gur says that the use of fMRI will improve and become widely used as one of the evidence-generating system in courts in the future.
