- Title
Mars exploration: Phoenix: a race against time.
- Authors
Hand, Eric
- Abstract
The article discusses the efforts of University of Arizona professor Peter Smith to develop and bolster the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Phoenix lander. While winter approaches on Mars, it is obvious to Smith that the lifespan of the lander is coming to an end. Having previously worked on the Mars Polar Lander and the Mars Pathfinder, Smith developed the Phoenix for a NASA competition associated with Mars exploration scouts. The lander was intended to take photographs, collect soil samples, and examine gaseous compositions through mass spectrometry.
