- Title
Virgo's vacuum failure stalls gravity-wave hunt.
- Abstract
The article offers information on the status of the Virgo gravity-wave interferometer experiment worth 80 million euro in Pisa, Italy. The experiment is incapacitated by a vacuum failure for most of the summer of 2008 and is expected to stay out of commission for another few months. When the unit was tested on May 9, 2008, a glass viewport in the L-shaped detector shattered, thus sending shards of glass into one of the laser-reflecting mirrors and its ancillary instrumentation. Because of the incident, the research team decided to replace all 100 viewports to avoid another failure.
