- Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are among the leading causes of morbidity, disability, workforce loss and mortality worldwide. Although many risk factors are involved in the development of CVD, the most frequently encountered ones are hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, obesity and anxiety-depression. Various methods have been indicated to play a role in primary and secondary prevention, the most effective one is the approach involving a healthy lifestyle (quitting smoking, increasing the level of physical activity and healthy diet) and stress management. One of the approaches based on stress management and exercise is yoga. Heart yoga is defined as a balanced physical exercise that not only reduces psychosocial symptoms but also improves cardiovascular and cognitive functions. It includes breath control and meditation practices. In yoga, light exercises strengthen muscles, breathing techniques contribute to myocardial oxygenation, and meditation reduces stress. Yoga exercises also help to better control lipid levels, blood glucose and pressure levels. All of these effects of yoga, which also reduces antihypertensive use, are due to its effect which reduces the level of adrenaline, the stress hormone and increases the level of endorphin hormone which makes you feel happy. The purpose of this review article is to create nurses' awareness of the concept of heart yoga, to introduce the healing powers and miraculous effects of, in other words benefits of heart yoga, and to integrate yoga in the healthcare of patients with CVD as a complementary and integrative health approach and exercise.
