- Abstract
Ballast forms the track bed upon which railroad ties are laid. The railroad ballast is composed by crushed stone. The degradation of the ballast aggregate is the factor that determines the service life. The reuse of this material type besides generating resources for the rail operator eliminates the environmental problem of stockpile in the specified yard. The functions of ballast are to provide a stable load-bearing platform and support the sleepers uniformly, acceptable stability to the ties against vertical and horizontally forces, to soften the efforts through pseudo-elastic structure the actions of the vehicles, drain the bars of the road and to allow the recovery of the geometric quality of the road by means of maintenance interventions. The methodology used in this work consist in analyze of the quality of the material of new ballast and of material used in old railroad tracks, with traffic around 30 years. It can be concluded that the material of recycled ballast can be used in several applications in the civil construction, as in the own rail company.
