- Abstract
The main goal of surgery is to remove the obstructing gallstone from the lumen of the small bowel.5 The literature reports the estimated risk of a recurrence of gallstone ileus to be 5-8% after an enterolithotomy.6 It is usually the result of an untreated bilioenteric fistula that remains after an enterolithotomy to treat the initial gallstone ileus. (2012) where patients presenting with any bowel obstruction secondary to gallstones who have residual gallstones but are not suitable candidates for a definitive repair of bilioenteric fistula undergo Cholecystoenterolithotomy at time of initial enterolithotomy.7 Had this been performed at initial operation this may have prevented the second bowel obstruction and a second surgery in this comorbid patient.
