- Abstract
The article discusses Ottoman civilization and European views of the Ottoman Empire and Turks. It comments on Ottoman art, architecture, and literature. The author examines religious hostilities between Christendom and Islam and addresses ideas about perceived Turkish religious fanaticism and intolerance. He also reflects on European views of Turks as barbarians and considers Western romantic and heroic legends about Turks. European views of the Ottoman government as incompetent and tyrannical are also analyzed.
