- Abstract
Hospitality center for cancer patients and their proxies In the Netherlands there is a growing attention for cancer patients and their families/friends by foundations functioning as open walking-in houses, emphasizing the importance of support by trained volunteers. Some of these houses also offer professional support. These houses are member of two national organizations, stressing their common interests. The number of open-walking-in houses (hospitality centers) is growing strongly (41 mid 2009) and also the number of visitors is increasing, given the variety of offered activities and supportive facilities. There is not much known of the visiting cancer patients and their proxies about their needs, background characteristics, their evaluation of the service, and experienced effects. This article gives a review of the available information on these topics in the Netherlands. It is a plea for a national study to fill-up the observed gaps in the knowledge about these houses.
