- Authors
Cagliari, Luiz Carlos
- Abstract
The Grammatica da Lingoagem Portuguesa by Fernão de Oliveira (1507-1582?) represents the first published grammar of Portuguese (1536). Like other similar grammars, this book focuses on the phonetics, the orthography, and the word formation as main topics. It is an important linguistic contribution to a better understanding of the Portuguese Language in the XVI century. From all the aspects that a modern linguist might be impressed by, the phonetics is the most outstanding, the most complete, and the most detailed study in that grammar. The phonetic description is so accurate that we can be sure that his phonetic description is a reliable work that shows many segmental and prosodic features of the Portuguese Language in his time.
