- Abstract
A study conducted in Israel found that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) did not experience more complications from serious acute conditions when visiting pediatric emergency departments (PEDs) compared to the overall population. The study analyzed data from over 850,000 patients who visited PEDs, including 52 patients with ASD. While there was a slightly higher percentage of complications in the ASD group (15.4% compared to 10.8% without ASD), the difference was not statistically significant. The study also found that children with ASD were more likely to visit community clinics and PEDs in the days leading up to their emergency visit. The authors suggest that despite the challenges of examining and communicating with children with ASD, healthcare providers should approach them with sensitivity and maintain a high level of suspicion and awareness.
