- Abstract
A global obesity epidemic among children and adolescents is apparent. Official position statements consider exercise therapy as a cornerstone in the treatment of obesity in children and adolescents. Physiotherapists working in private and home care settings in first-line treatment can play a key role in maximizing exercise program participation rates, thereby increasing the community-scale clinical benefits of increased physical activity. However, it remains unclear how clinical guidelines can be applied in private practice and home care physiotherapy settings given the limited equipment, infrastructure and time. In this clinical recommendation, a systematic, effective, and feasible approach for pre-participation screening and implementation of clinically effective and medically safe exercise interventions or increased physical activity programs in children and adolescents with obesity is provided for firstline physiotherapists, with the aim to contribute to better care and treatment of obesity in these under-aged patients. The current guideline consists of three parts: 1. Impact of exercise intervention, exercise physiology and optimisation of exercise intervention, 2. Screening ahead of exercise participation, and 3. Maximization of exercise therapy adherence.
