- Abstract
Asperger's syndrome is a form of autism characterised by abnormal behaviour and social malfomationing. Mental abilities of the patients are usually normal, nevertheless learning abilities may be sometimes impaired. Characteristic are changes in voice and speech. Asperger's syndrome is found in 10-26/10000 cases; it is more frequent in males (approximately 30-50% of cases). Large variation in the types and intensities of the symptoms causes that the syndrome sometimes remains non-detected. The aim of the paper is to present the diagnosis and therapy of dysphonia in a 15-year boy with Asperger's syndrome, diagnosed incidentally during phoniatric examination. The voice disorders were evaluated using perceptual estimation, laryngovideostroboscopy (LVSS) and acoustic analysis. Moreover, the boy was subjected to psychological and psychiatric examination. The voice was estimated as abnormally high, squeaky; speech as soft and monotonous with disorders of intonation and prosody. Vocal training was applied, resulting in lower voice, longer phonation and better voice stability, while speech disturbances continued. The case confirms that incidental diagnosing of Asperger's syndrome is feasible. The authors stress the necessity of vocal training in the Asperger's syndrome patients.
