The article offers a comparison of chronic manual and automated red blood cell exchange transfusion among patients with sickle cell disease. Topics discussed include treatment and prevention of the multisystem complications in sickle cell disease (SCD), reduction of sickle haemoglobin (HbS) without raising final hematocrit (Hct) by Red blood cell (RBC) exchange transfusion (RBCX), and use of manual RBCX for patients undergoing sequential phlebotomies and transfusions.
