- Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases are increasing both worldwide and in Colombia, specifically in the department of Quindío, due to its high population of older adults. These types of diseases affect their degree of functionality and their quality of life. For this reason, it is important to study the preserved or impaired social cognition skills in older adults who suffer from this disease. Thus, this research aimed to compare the differences in the functioning of social cognition skills in older adults with dementia according to their etiology, whether of neurodegenerative, vascular, or mixed origin. The research involved 80 adults diagnosed with dementia: 30 neurodegenerative, 25 vascular, and 25 mixed, to whom a protocol was applied that included two scales for measuring social cognition: The Mini SEA test and the IRI test. It was obtained that there is no significant difference between the three groups evaluated; all are above 0.05. However, it can be concluded that all, regardless of the type of dementia, present alteration of the results for the measure overview of social cognition.
