- Abstract
Although many researchers have studied waterfowl during the last 100 years, there are very few sources of published egg sizes for North American waterfowl. With few exceptions, earlier published duck egg metrics data represented only a small number of eggs from a limited geographic area and from few historic sources. Comparison of egg sizes among different species, among research projects, or between years or regions is difficult when comparative data are unavailable. We measured egg size metrics on 67,537 eggs representing 34 wild North American duck species. Size metrics were taken from eggs in museum collections (N = 30,762) and from eggs measured during recent field research studies (N = 36,775). Collectively, our egg metrics spanned the 151-year period from 1859- 2010. The average egg metrics of 11 duck species in our study were smaller than those reported in other sources; those of 9 species were larger than those reported in other sources; and the metrics of 14 species corresponded to those reported in other sources.
