- Abstract
Eating disorders (ED) are psychiatric disorders that predominantly affect young women and present a high impact on health and quality of life. Recently it has been shown that patients with these pathologies present alterations in cognitive functioning that are related to the chronicity and a poorer prognosis of the illness. Despite of this, in our field, the cognitive profile of patients with ED has been little explored. The aim of this work was to assess the neuropsychological profile of a group of Argentinean women with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) and compare it with healthy controls (HC). We performed a cross-sectional, comparative-descriptive study. A total of 98 women (38 with AN, 32 with BN and 28 HC) were evaluated with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Psychological aspects like the presence of anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive symptoms were also assessed. Groups did not differ in age, IQ or years of education. Compared with HC, patients with AN had a poorer performance in attention (p<0.05), learning (p<0.05), verbal memory (p<0.05), visual memory (p<0.05) and central coherence (p<0.01). Patients with BN showed poorer performance in attention (p<0.01) and central coherence (p<0.01) compared to HC. AN patients presented a cognitive profile characterized by difficulties in attention, verbal and visual memory and central coherence. Patients with BN showed difficulties in attentional function and central coherence. The neuropsychological evaluation of ED patients in our field is useful in order to develop different treatment strategies.
