- Abstract
This article describes a study on the essential oil of Piper mosenii (EOPm) and its potential antibacterial and modulating effects against oral microbiota bacteria. Chemical analyses and tests of antibacterial activity and modulation of bacterial resistance were performed. EOPm showed antimicrobial activity against strains of Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1024 μg/mL. Furthermore, when combined with antibiotics, EOPm showed a relevant synergistic effect in reducing the MIC of the tested products. Further tests with different combinations of products, concentrations of EOPm, and evaluation of toxicity and in vivo assays are recommended.
