- Abstract
The article offers information about 18th century probability theories published by French mathematicians Pierre Rémond de Montmort and Abraham De Moivre; and Swiss mathematician Jacob Bernouilli. Montmort's "Essay d'analyse sur les jeux de hazard" was published in 1708 and was followed by a second edition in 1713. Bernouilli's posthumous work "Ars Conjectandi" was published in 1713, and De Moivre's "De Mensura Sortis" appeared in 1711 and was later enlarged into "The Doctrine of Chances" in 1718. The author compares and contrasts the works on the probabilities of games of chance and discusses the historical dispute between Montmort and De Moivre who accused each other of plagiarism.
