- Abstract
This article shares the experiences in the Florida Department of Corrections involving intranasal abuse of gabapentin, an anticonvulsant agent, among several inmates with prior histories of cocaine dependence. Concerns arising from inmates' request for refills of gabapentin sooner than scheduled. It was found that the inmates have been opening the capsules and engaging in intranasal snorting of the controlled powder. Results of findings and similar accounts led to the removal of gabapentin from the corrections formulary in August 2001. A discussion is presented in an effort to alert other practitioners to the potential of gabapentin abuse and to encourage other providers to report any similar experiences.
