- Abstract
The article discusses relations between the government and wheat growers in Australia under Prime Minister James Scullin, during the early years of the Great Depression. Topics discussed include: the approaches of Scullin's Labor Party government to the production, price, and marketing of wheat; the political organization of wheat farmers prior to the formation of the Australian Wheatgrowers' Federation; and reasons for the failure of the government's policies and the ensuing financial crisis in the wheat industry.
