- Title
A Touching Image: Andrea Mantegna’s Engraving of the Virgin and Child.
- Authors
FISHER, SUSANNAH
- Abstract
In an essay, the author discusses an engraving of the Virgin and Child by the Italian Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna. The author pays particular focus to the Virgin's gesture as she lovingly caresses and touches the infant Jesus. It is argued that Mary's gesture along with the print's entire composition are what give the work its emotional intensity and why it has been so universally praised for more than 500 years.
