- Abstract
"Left in the Center: The Liberal Party of New York and the Rise and Fall of American Social Democracy" by Daniel Soyer is a meticulously researched book that explores the history, impact, and legacy of the Liberal Party of New York. The party, established in 1944, aimed to preserve and extend the New Deal and served as a vehicle for noncommunist progressives. However, over time, the party changed significantly, with diminished trade union engagement, generational divides, factional infighting, and a focus on patronage and contracts. The decline of the party can be attributed to ideological bankruptcy, political opportunism, corruption, and social changes that eroded its base. Despite its ultimate demise, the Liberal Party played an important role in building New York's brand of social democracy.
