- Abstract
The aim of this article is to evaluate whether or not co-operatives are organizations that promote the formation and strengthening of social capital and contribute to local sustainable development. Co-operatives contribute to the evolution of their members in both economic and the social dimensions: In the economic dimension, by improving income through the greater availability of the cooperative member's product or services on the market; in the social dimension, through social inclusion and availability to the cooperative member of new knowledge as well as getting closer to a network of contacts with other co-operative members. With this purpose in mind, a bibliographic study about social capital and co-operativism was made, as well as a field study to evaluate and demonstrate whether the co-operative institution contributes to local development and strengthens joint capital among its members.
