- Abstract
In studies dealing with discipleship and the church's mission, the expression ‘preserving the new church members’ can frequently be found. If one analyzes this phrase carefully—focusing particularly upon the term ‘preserve’—it can be observed that the concept denotes a different (and often contrary) activity to the one given to the church by Christ. The church has been called by God to make disciples. This ideal becomes a reality when those accepting the gospel are transformed into evangelists. Confirmation in the faith involves the important post-baptismal mission of the church and is done by human agents. This mission is based on sound biblical evidence and denotes a positive and dynamic activity that should be a reality in the life of the members of the church.
