- Authors
Bernstein, Eden Y.; Moreno, Jorge O.; Edelman, E. Jennifer
- Abstract
The article discusses the use of medications for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and draws comparisons to the use of medications for obesity. It highlights the societal stigma and moralization associated with both conditions, which can hinder the widespread adoption of medications for AUD. The article explores the factors that have contributed to the success of medications for obesity, such as extensive pharmaceutical advertising and public figures sharing their experiences. It also addresses the disparities in medication use among historically minoritized groups and suggests the need for qualitative studies and patient-centered implementation efforts to increase the utilization of medications for AUD. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of shifting cultural attitudes and raising awareness through public health campaigns.
