Discusses the prophylactic application of fluoroquinolones for selective decontamination of the gut. Clinical epidemiological effects of discontinuous use of prophylactic fluoroquinolones, especially among neutropenic patients with leukemia; Prophylactic treatment with antimicrobial agents; Optimal clinical effectiveness in combination with a minimal risk for selection of resistant bacteria; Finding that 50% of all centers involved in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation used fluoroquinolones for prophylaxis of bacterial infections.
