- Abstract
After the end of Cold War, NATO has transformed through global cooperation, from a collective defense organization to a collective security organization. Originally founded for the purpose of defending Western Europe against the Soviet threat, NATO is a security alliance that will only survive if it deals with the current security challenges faced by its members. Therefore, NATO has recognized that dealing with today's complex new threats requires wide international cooperation and collective effort. That is why NATO has developed a network of partnerships in the security field. As a result, NATO recognised certain features of the Mediterranean and Middle East geopolitical region and the growth of its importance for causing a level of instability and insecurity that call for a reevaluation of the region as a security priority. Initiating MD in 1994 and ICI in 2004, NATO has enhanced its role by leading the Operation Unified Protector in Libya that took place in 2011 and due to the calls for training and equipping Iraq army in the face of DAESH threat.
