- Abstract
To provide a proper nursing care to children with oesophageal atresia with regards to nutrition, the involvement and education of parents is of primary importance. Goal. To review and describe the contents and methods of education of parents about nutrition of children with oesophageal atresia who cannot undergo primary anastomosis surgery, as reported by current literature. Materials and methods. Literature review using Pubmed and other biomedical databases in English and Italian. Results. 42 papers were analysed. Literature underlines that parents should be trained about gastrostomy management and about the administration of enteral nutrition. After reconstructive surgery, parents should be involved in promoting oral feeding in the child. When discharged from hospital, parents should be trained to deal with the main possible complications and feeding difficulties. Discussion. In clinical practice, standard educational interventions should be available, to be adapted to specific educational needs of each family.
