- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of autonomy within philosophical tradition and historical context. The main reasons for the interest in autonomy include the value and promotion of patient autonomy being one of the guiding principles of medicine, patients get better if they feel a heightened sense of self-efficacy and autonomy, and the concept of autonomy has a rich philosophical tradition. The differences between personal and group autonomy are highlighted.
