- Abstract
Background: What one's university education is worth depends neither on the prestige of the university one graduated from nor on very high marks received in exams. Its real value is verified by the requirements of labor market. The aim of this study was to collect and analyze physiotherapists' opinions both on the preparation for the profession acquired during university studies and on the most important determinants of professional success. Material and methods: A group of 123 physiotherapists took part in the survey. The authors designed their own questionnaire specially for the purpose of this study. It consisted of questions of general character and specific ones about: education level, opinions on university professional preparation and the most important elements of the preparation. Differentiation of the opinions was calculated by the chi-square test. Results: According to university graduates the most important school subjects were kinesiotherapy (75.6%) and anatomy (68.1%), followed by physical therapy, manual therapy, clinical training (43.1%). Work experience (87%) and supplementary training courses (57%) were indicated as the two most important elements in professional career. Awareness of the importance of the two aforementioned factors increases with age. Graduates of private schools are more satisfied with their studies than those of public schools (p<0.05). Conclusions: 1. There are discrepancies between the practice standards adopted by universities and the expectations determined by labor market. 2. University curricula should provide elective and specialization courses. 3. Universities should work on improving the quality of education.
