- Authors
Herman, Alexander; Gallo, Chiara
- Abstract
This article discusses the return of three fragments from the Parthenon's sculptural scheme from the Vatican Museum to the Acropolis Museum in Athens. The fragments were permanently transferred and the return ceremony was attended by prestigious figures from both Greece and the Vatican. The article explores the legal basis for the transfer and the concept of inalienability in the Vatican's collections. It also discusses the Vatican's changing approach to restitution and the potential for future donations of cultural works. The article concludes by stating that while the legal framework for restitution has been established, further guidance and ethical guidelines are needed for a fair and transparent restitution process.
