- Title
Surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation: early survival benefit or residual confounding?
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses a study on the outcomes of surgical ablation (SA) in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing cardiac surgery. The study found immediate and persistent adjusted survival benefits associated with SA. However, the authors question the early survival benefit and suggest that it may be due to unmeasured confounding variables. They propose using a different study design, called provider-preference instrumental variable analysis, to further investigate this finding. The authors encourage the consideration of this alternative analysis to determine if residual confounding may explain the early treatment effect attributed to SA.
