- Abstract
The article discusses the role of oats and their fibre, beta-glucan, in cholesterol reduction. Suggestions are also made for how often oats should be included in a balanced diet and how much to consume. What cholesterol is, why the beta-glucan soluble fibre of cereals has proven the most effective in lowering cholesterol, and how oat beta-glucan works are considered. Dietary considerations and advice to help patients achieve healthier diets are given.
