- Abstract
Particulate reinforced composites (PRC) have been widely used in engineering fields such as automobile, aerospace and construction industries. This material is composed of metallic particles and a polymer matrix. For the safe application of particulate reinforced composites, it is important to estimate the crack propagation behavior and the tendency of fracture. Especially, particulate reinforced composites for aerospace industry is used to get propulsion as solid fuel and it should be cautiously applied to avoid crack problems. In this study, particulate reinforced composites is manufactured as a single cracked sheet specimen. Crack propagation tests were conducted under constant strain rates at various temperatures to estimate the effect of temperature and strain rates on the crack propagation behavior. Also, digital image correlation is used to measure strain fields on the surface of specimens during the tests. This method can evaluate the strain contour under non-contact condition. Then test results are discussed in the framework of fracture mechanics.
