Abstract: Die Wasserstoffentwicklungsreaktion (hydrogen evolution reaction, HER) ist ein grundlegender Vorgang in der Elektrokatalyse und spielt eine wichtige Rolle bei der Energieumwandlung zur Entwicklung von wasserstoffbasierten Energiequellen. Die recht langsame Geschwindigkeit der HER unter alkalischen Bedingungen hemmte jedoch die Fortschritte bei Wasserspaltungsverfahren zur Produktion von hochreinem Wasserstoff. Anders als bei der gut dokumentierten sauren HER sind die mechanistischen Aspekte der alkalischen HER noch zu klären. Wir legen eine kritische Bewertung der alkalischen HER‐Elektrokatalyse vor, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Zusammenhangs zwischen der grundlegenden Oberflächenelektrochemie an Einkristallmodellen und dem abgeleiteten molekularen Designprinzip für reale Elektrokatalysatoren. Indem wir einige typische Beispiele für theoretische Berechnungen, Oberflächencharakterisierungen und elektrochemische Experimente vorstellen, möchten wir einige wichtige anhaltende Diskussionen thematisieren, um zu einem besseren Verständnis der alkalischen HER auf atomarer Ebene beizutragen.
