- Abstract
The article presents information about Aulus Gellius, a Latin grammarian and the translation of his work. Aulus Gellius collected together many curious pieces, which he extracted from the books he had read; by which means they are preserved in his Noctes Atticae, which would otherwise have been lost, because most of the books, from whence they are taken, are not now extant. This consideration renders the work valuable. No such opportunity presenting itself, the honor of being the first complete translation in print, albeit preceded by selective renderings into French in 1776-67 and German in 1785, goes to the Archimandrite Afanasij Lvanov's Russian version of 1787.
